The Nate Mack Harvest Festival is Friday, November 1, 2019. Every year, the Nate Mack PTO hosts a giant Raffle and Silent Auction of baskets and other generously donated items. Each classroom is asked to collect, through individual family donations, items for a themed gift basket. This year, our classroom has chosen a UNLV themed basket to present at Harvest Festival! Please be sure to send in anything UNLV related to your classroom by October 24, 2019 so it can be properly wrapped and labeled in time for the event! As with all donation requests, participation is completely optional. Any donations are greatly appreciated by our classroom, as well as the PTO! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns! Thank you,

Congratulations to Charlie for being chosen as our Mountain Lion of the Month for the month of September. Charlie shows his Nate Mack Pride everyday. I'm so glad that Charlie is in Room 11.
This week we read books about the seasons; Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter and learned why we have seasons. We focused on asking and answering questions about the text. We also identified the main topic and found key details within the text.
Our math lessons focused on addition and subtraction with word problems. We took our math test on Friday. The test will be sent home on Monday. Please review the questions with your child. In writing our lessons have continued to focus on writing a Personal Narrative. We have learned some strategies to help us spell words and ways to bring our stories to LIFE. We have also learned that a noun is a person, place, thing, or animal. We have been reading sentences and identifying common nouns. We have continued to investigate sound this week and made a String Telephone. Next week (September 30-October 4) is Week of Respect. Each day the students will focus on parts of the Nate Mack Pride. Tuesday is HATS OFF TO RESPECT. Students can wear a hat to school. Wednesday is National Walk to School Day. Students should follow the rules/laws/safety precautions if they walk to school. Friday is GET YOUR BLUE ON. Students should wear blue clothes to school that day. Some Reminders:
This week’s Life Book assignment is to write about anything you want. You can find something special from your house to glue inside your book or a special photo, or you can illustrate a picture. Write at least 4 sentences. Be sure to begin your sentences with a capital letter, end with proper punctuation, and leave spaces between your words.
Life Books are due by Friday. In reading this week our focus was on ask and answer questions. We have been reading nonfiction books about sound. We did some science experiments with sound and now know that sound is made by vibrations. We took a walk outside to identify sounds that we hear outside.
In writing, we have continued to write our Personal Narrative stories. A Personal Narrative is a story about something that you did or something that has happened to you. We are learning how to bring our stories to LIFE by adding movement or talking to our stories. We continue to work on making sure our sentences beginning with a capital letter, have spaces, have ending punctuation, and are written neatly. Our math lessons hav focused on word problems with addition and subtraction. We have used a number bond to help us find the missing parts of our number sentences. Friday we will be having a math test. This week for homework I will be sending home a practice test to complete for homework. Students MUST show their work when completing the math problems. Friday, September 27 is Harry Potter Spirit Day. After school we will be having a Harry Potter Wizard Event from 2:15-3:15. Flyers went home on Thursday with more information about this after school activity. Some Reminders:
Monday is the first day of fall. Your Life Book assignment this week is to write about your favorite season. State your opinion and give 3 reasons why you like that season. Then add a closing sentence. You should have 5 sentences and an illustration of you in your favorite. Practice reading your Life Book so you are ready to share it with the class.
Life Books are due by Friday in the Ziploc bag. This week we went to the Nate Mack Garden to help Farmer Chelsea. Here are a few pictures of some of the things we saw. As your child to tell you about each of the pictures.
In Reading this week we read the book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon. We focused on asking and answering questions about the character, setting, and identify the lesson in the story. We took a quiz on Thursday. Check your child's folder to see how they did. Our math lessons continued to focus on addition and subtraction with word problems. We took a quiz on Wednesday. The quiz was sent home on Friday. This was a formative assessment, worth only 10% of your child’s math grade. At the middle of a teaching unit, we will have a formative assessment, and at the end of a teaching unit, we will have a summative assessment, which is worth 90% of their grade. If your child did not do well on this assessment, it could be that they need more time to develop their math skills. Please reiterate to your child the importance of being a whole body listener (eyes on the speaker, calm and quiet hands/feet, sitting in the chair or on the rug appropriately, etc.). In addition, please continue to practice these math skills at home. We will have a summative assessment in a few weeks. I will also work with your child to re-teach any concepts that they may have struggled with. In writing our lessons have continued to focus on writing a Personal Narrative. We have learned some strategies to help us spell words. We read the book We Are Alike We Are Different by Janice Behrens and discussed how we are alike and different from our friends. We are learning how to express our emotions in a healthy way. Some Reminders:
Congratulations to Lily and Nolan for participating in the play Pinocchio. The class saw the play on Friday and everyone loved it. This week's Life Book assignment is to write about your first birthday. Ask your mom or dad to tell you some things that you did, what kind of cake you ate, and what made it a special day. Write at least 4 sentences about your first birthday. Remember to write the date and include a picture or illustration. Be sure to begin your sentences with a capital letter, end with proper punctuation, and leave spaces between your words.
Life Books are due on Friday in the Ziploc bag. This week's Life Book assignment is to write about something you like to do with your family. Illustrate a picture or glue a real photograph with your writing. Remember to write in complete sentences, using your best spelling (spelling doesn’t have to be perfect, but you should stretch/write the sounds that you hear in your writing! Write at least 4 sentences. Be sure to begin your sentences with a capital letter, end with proper punctuation, and leave spaces between your words.
Life Books are due on FRIDAY. Beginning this week (and for much of the school year), all students in our classroom will have math homework assigned to them in an online format. Students are expected to practice using technology each week at school as part of the first grade standards. ScootPad will be a great digital tool to grow our students in the technological world! Students will need to log-in to ScootPad to complete their assigned math homework this week. You will notice that there are other sections available for student use (Math Adaptive Practice, ELA Adaptive Practice, etc.). Students will be able to work on their individual adaptive practices at home, and at school. The adaptive practices, or learning paths, are EXTRA practice for students, and are not assigned as homework. The learning paths will be utilized regularly at school. At this time, the only required use of ScootPad will be the math component for homework. On Friday, I will check for math completion noted on ScootPad’s behavior section. Here’s how to access the homework:
- www.scootpad.com - Log-in using the students password information (sent home on Monday) - In the student dashboard, click “launch” under the tab that says “Math Homework week of September 10th” - Students will have all week to complete the assigned 40 problems. Students can log in and out as many times as needed throughout the week. I would recommend completing 10 problems each night, however, this is completely up to you! Thank you in advance for helping your child to build strong homework habits. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask! |
Welcome!
