This week we read the book The Recess Queen by Alexis O'Neill. We focused on retelling the story and finding the central message or lesson of the story. Ask your child to tell you the central message or lesson they learned from listening to the story The Recess Queen.
In math your child learned to subtract by counting on. When you count on to subtract, you start with the number being subtracted and then count on to the total. The number of times you count on to get to the total is the answer to the subtraction problem. This strategy allows your child to use addition to solve subtracton problems. We have continued to practice writing our numbers to 120 and counting objects in our Counting Bags. In writing our lessons have continued to focused on handwriting (correct letter formation) and writing complete sentences with capitals, spacing and punctuation. Your child should be able to write 3 or more sentences at this time. We have also been learning about Healthy Habits. We know that we should wash our hands after we use the restroom, brush our teeth at least 2 times a day, get 60 minutes of exercise everyday, drink plenty of water, and get a good nights sleep to help our bodies stay healthy. Mrs. Cowley stopped by Room 11 to teach a lesson on "Whole Body Listening". We learned that we need to listen not only with our ears, but with our eyes on the speaker, hand and feet safe and to our self, our brain, our mouths are quiet, and our hearts are caring and listening to the speaker. We are practicing using our "WHOLE" body to help us become better listeners. On Wednesday, September 4 there is a PTO Meeting at 2:30 in the Stem Learning Library. Everyone is welcome to attend. Friday is Donuts and Dads in the Multipurpose Room. Everyone is welcome to attend. Friday is Field Day. It will take place from 8:15 to 10:30 am. Please have your child wear tennis shoes, a hat, wear sun screen, and bring a water bottle. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the office or Coach Spencer. The Family Picnic has been canceled for this Friday, but will be rescheduled for later in the fall to to the hot weather. Congratulations to Camryn for being chosen as our Mountain Lion of the Month for the month of August. Camryn shows her Nate Mack Pride everyday. I'm so glad that Camryn is in Room 11.
This week we read the book Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin. We learned that good readers ask questions while they are reading. We focused on who (characters) and where (setting). When your child is reading to you at home, have them ask and answer questions using details from the text. Ask Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? questions.
In math we have been learning to add two numbers by counting on. When you count on to add, you start with one number and then count to find a total. This strategy helps your child find the number of objects in a group without having to count every object. I writing, we have continued to write complete sentences with capitals, spaces, and punctuation. Sight Words List 1 went home with your child last week. Please have your child practice reading the words out loud. They should be able to read them within 3 seconds. If they are able to read all 20 words, then have them practice spelling the words. Students will be checked to see if they can read the words on Thursday, They must pass the list at 80% to move on to List 2. Scootpad log in information is coming home soon. I will be sending home the information after Labor Day. The students were so excited to share the covers of their Life Books. Every week your child will bring home their Life Book. They will have a writing prompt for homework. Your child may use photos or drawings to add to their writing. The Life Book needs to be returned by Friday in the Ziploc Bag. We will be sharing their writing and pictures in class. Thank you for your participation. The kids just love their special books and we will surely see a love for witting increase. Mrs. Ryan, the school counselor, stopped by Room 11 to help us learn about Kelso's Choices. Kelso's Choices help students to solve small problems. She discussed the difference between small problems and BIG problems. Thank you to everyone who attended the Volunteer Training last week. I will be creating a volunteer schedule one I am finished assessing the class. If you attended the training, I will be emailing you with your day and times next week. Thank you for your patience. Please take a look through your child’s folder nightly and take out any papers that are not needed. Purple folders should be sent to school everyday with their behavior log inside. We have learned how to work cooperatively with our friends at math stations. The students have been participating in Number Talks using dot cards. We have been looking at patterns and sharing our thinking. In Social Studies we have been learning the school and classroom rules. The classroom rules are:

School Hours
Special Classes Schedule – 10:50 am - 11:40 am
Classroom Behavior Plan - In order to maintain a positive and respectful environment for learning, all students are expected to follow these rules in the classroom:
I believe that the most effective way to have a well behaved class is to teach each child responsibility. Therefore, my class behavior plan involves each child and is directed in a positive way. Learning cannot occur in an environment with no discipline. Each day your child will start the school day with a “clean record” - a yellow card. As the day progresses, inappropriate behavior by a child causes a change to a green card. If the behavior continues, your child will change their card to red (stop). I will have a short conference with your child to discuss their behavior. The final blue card requires a note or phone call home. Cards may be changed back if the behavior improves in a reasonable amount of time during the day. At the end of the day, students will color their sun on their behavior log the color of the card that they ended up on. Please review and sign your child’s behavior log nightly and talk to your child about his/her behavior. In addition, there will be several other positive management methods in our classroom. Rewards, personal praise, and encouragement will help us maintain good behavior. Yellow Sun – Excellent Behavior Green Sun – Verbal Warning Red Sun – Verbal Warnings and Student Conference with the Teacher Blue Sun – Note or Phone call home Students rewards for positive behavior:
Homework Your child will have homework Monday through Thursday. A newsletter will be sent home on Monday with your child’s homework for the week. Students will have math homework online using the website Scootpad. Please help your child log into Scootpad and check the work when they have finished. If your child is having difficultly, please let me know. Your child will also have reading and writing homework. Students will need to read 15 minutes every night and complete a Reading Log. Students are required to turn in 2 Reading Logs each month. Students will have a Life Book (composition notebook) to complete a writing prompt each week. Life Books are due by Friday. Nate Mack Homework Policy – Student/Parent Handbook It is beneficial for students to establish effective study habits early in their education. Guidelines have been established for the assignment of homework at Nate Mack, consistent with Clark County School District regulations. ● Daily homework will consist of approximately 10 min. per grade level (K-5) ● All students will be expected to read, or be read to, for pleasure daily, in addition to their assigned homework ● Students will have online homework, designed just for them, on the Scootpad website ● There will be no homework over weekends or holiday breaks, except for in special cases ● Homework will not be graded, but students will receive timely teacher feedback on their work ● Students’ report cards will reflect their homework completion rate with a mark of E, S, or N (excellent, satisfactory, or needs improvement) Take Home Folder The teacher will provide a folder for your child. Please help your child to establish a daily routine for checking the folder for papers and keeping it in their backpack so that it comes to school every day. Your child’s Behavior Log should stay in their folder. Breakfast, Lunch and Supper All students at Nate Mack are eligible for breakfast (beginning at 7:40am), lunch, and supper (2:45-3:15pm) at no cost. Your child may bring a lunch from home. If they do, please be sure to mark his or her name and room number on the lunch box or sack. First Grade will be having lunch and recess daily from 11:45 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. Birthdays Birthdays are very exciting for first graders. The Nate Mack Elementary School Parent Handbook states, “Classroom birthday parties are not allowed at school, however, teachers may recognize students’ birthdays by providing a pencil, birthday hat, etc. Private birthday invitations may not be distributed at school unless the entire class is invited. To better protect instructional time and honor student health restrictions, birthday snacks provided by parents, are not allowed at school.” This year we are launching a new way to celebrate our students at Nate Mack. Students can celebrate their special day at school by purchasing a message to be displayed on our new digital message board. It will be displayed all day in the multipurpose room. $15 for the all day banner message. The message will read: Happy Birthday (Child’s Name)! Please see the Nate Mack website for more information. Star of the Week – Each week I will select one student from the class to be the “Star of the Week”. The Friday before your child will receive a letter informing you about his/her selection, as well as a paper for your child to fill out. Please use the weekend to work on this together and bring back to school on Monday. The student may bring pictures and a few special objects to share with the class. The student should be able to read the paper and answer questions from the class. Each student will have the opportunity to be the “Star of the Week”. Volunteers I appreciate those who volunteer. It is beneficial not only to your child, but to all of the students in our classroom. Volunteers are needed to help in and out of the classroom. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the attached Volunteer sheet. There will be a mandatory Volunteer Training that all volunteers must attend on Friday, August 16 at 8:00 am in the multipurpose room. Some lunchboxes did not get picked up today. So if your child brought lunch from home and their lunchbox is not in their backpack it is in the classroom. Sorry about the mix up today.
