Congratulations to Gavin for being our August Mountain Lion of the Month. Gavin has been working hard in class and is showing his Mountain Lion life skills everyday. He is kind and helpful to his teachers and friends. I’m so glad that Gavin is in Room 11.

This week we read the book Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin. We learned that good readers ask questions while they are reading. We focused on the 5 W's (who, what, where, when, and why). When your child is reading to you at home, have them ask and answer questions using details from the text.
In math we have been working on making combinations to 10 using cubes. The students were able to make a recording and write a number sentence (5+1= 6) to match. We learned how to use Counting Bags to help us count orally and write our numbers. Students in first grade should be able to count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. They should be able to read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. Sight Words List 1 went home with your child last week. Please have your child practice reading the words out loud. They should be able to read them within 3 seconds. If they are able to read all 20 words, then have them practice spelling the words. Students will be checked to see if they can read the words on Thursday, August 31. They must pass at an 80% to move on to List 2. Scootpad log in information is coming home soon. I will be sending home the information after Labor Day. Scootpad is an online website for students to practice grade level skills. It is up to you how long and when your child logs in. They will have access to use it at school and at home. I will not be assigning it for homework at this time. The students were so excited to share the covers of their Life Books. Every week your child will bring home their Life Book. They will have a writing prompt for homework. Your child may use photos or drawings to add to their writing. The Life Book needs to be returned by Friday in the Ziploc Bag. We will be sharing their writing and pictures in class. Thank you for your participation. The kids just love their special books and we will surely see a love for witting increase. AR starts on Monday, August 28. We will have a parent volunteer this week to help the students take an AR test. The Library will be open before and after school to take AR test. The first graders need 30 AR points and a passing rate of 80% by May to earn the AR medal at the awards ceremony. Please take a look through your child’s folder nightly and take out any papers that are not needed. Purple folders should be sent to school everyday. This week's assignment is to write about your family. Include a photo if you can. Write at least 3 sentences describing your family. Remember to write the date at the top of the page. Thank you for volunteering to help in the classroom and at home. I will be setting up a volunteer schedule starting the week on September 5. All volunteers must attend a Volunteer Training at Nate Mack. The Volunteer Training is tomorrow (Friday, August 25) at 8:00 a.m. in the MPR. Please plan on attending if you would like to volunteer at school.
Dear Parent:
During the week of August 28, your child will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®). We give students MAP tests to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of ELA and Math. Your child will take the tests on a computer. MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. And with MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child’s growth. Over the next few days, your child will spend a total of about 2 hours hours completing these tests. Each school year, students in grades First through Third take the tests in August, and grades Kindergarten through Third take the tests in January and May. Following each testing period, you will receive a report showing your child’s growth. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. Partnering to help all kids learn, parents and teachers can have a profound positive effect on the lives of our children. For more information, see: https://www.nwea.org/resources/a-parents-guide-to-map/ Sincerely, Mrs. Baugh Mrs. Baugh’s class will be taking the ELA test on Monday, August 28 and the Math test on Thursday, August 31. Please have your child attend school on those days and every day. Nate Mack will be on an Inclement Weather schedule which means we will have indoor recess on Monday during the Solar Eclipse. We will not be participating in the Solar Eclipse outside due to safety reasons. We will be able to watch the live feed of the eclipse on Channel 8 in our classroom so that students can safely experience the eclipse. The link is: www.lasvegasnow.com/live-stream.
If you have any questions or concerns please let me know. Thank you! We have had a busy week in First Grade.
We have been focusing on the reading strategy "Check for Understanding". When your child is reading have them stop and ask themselves:
During math time we have been learning new games for our Math Stations. The students have been participating in Number Talks using dot cards. We have been looking at patterns and sharing our thinking. In Social Studies we have been learning the rules and expectations at Nate Mack. We have made classroom rules and that when we don't follow the rules there will be consequences. Reading Logs will be going home on Monday. Remember that your child needs to read to someone nightly for 15 minutes. This month the parents can fill out the the Reading Log. Next month I would like the students to fill out at least 2 books on their Reading Log. Life Books will be sent home on Monday. Please read the green paper that is glued to the inside cover. This week's assignment will be to decorate the front cover. Please include your child's name on the cover. Life Books are due on Friday. They can always be turned in early. Scootpad will be available soon. I will be sending home a parent letter and your child's login information. Scootpad will be for those students who would like to have extra homework. I will not be assigning Scootpad for nightly homework. Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post. The first person to leave a comment will receive a prize from Mrs. Baugh. Thank you to everyone who came to Open House Thursday night. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
